In this workshop, Mary Beth will guide you through her process of making mixed-media abstract collages. She will take you through the steps of free writing, creating personalized elements for collage, mark making, and more. You'll create and gather enough material to then compile them into a mixed-media collage painting on wood. Inspired by the beautiful surroundings of Squam Lake and the breathtaking landscape, Mary Beth will encourage you to explore marks, texture, layers, values, and more. This class is designed to help you reconnect to SELF and explore the ways mixed media art can help you express your life using color, paper, and paint.

Exploring Abstract Mixed Media Paintings
Exploring Abstract Mixed Media Paintings Learn to create a series of abstract mixed media paintings embedded with meaning. Have you noticed that you gravitate to similar things over and over? I know that I do for sure! During this class, we will dig deep and discover what lights us up individually. Using this information, we will then move into abstract work which highlights those things we love. We start with loose mark making followed by the creation of a Collagraph plate. Using this plate, we delve into simple printmaking (without a press) and surface design that will provide us with personalized collage papers to use in our work. I will teach you my three step process that facilitates success for all levels of artist. Throughout our time together, we will consider composition, value changes, shape, texture and color as we work across multiple substrates. It will be helpful to bring your working art journal along with photographs you have taken. I will also be using my smart phone to review photos I have taken and wish to reference in this work. Supplies: There is a $25 cash charge for the paints, mediums and other supplies I will bring for us to share. You may pay me the first morning of class. In addition, you will need the following: Substrates - I plan on bringing a pad of 140 (minimum) pound Mixed Media paper, along with several canvas boards or stretched canvas or wood panels. This decision is up to you, but please be mindful we will be sharing space, so don’t go too big with your choice. I will stick with 9x12 or 12x12. If you bring wood panels, you may wish to buy pre-gessoed panels or gesso them yourself before arrival. Brushes - whatever you typically use to paint with acrylic will be great. You will also need a grungy brush for gluing. I will bring brushes for shared use also. If you have other mark making tools you enjoy, bring those along as well. Paint - I will bring all Golden products including gesso, mediums, fluid acrylics, high flow paints and heavy body tubes. I typically work in a minimum palette and do a lot of mixing; if you have a special color you know you will need, bring it along. Pens, Markers, Pencils - I like to make marks on my work and typically use fat black pencils from Jerry’s Artarama, oil based pencils and permanent writing pens. I also like acrylic paint markers. At times I use water soluble pencils. I will bring a quantity of these for everyone to share, so you can try them out and see what you like. Again, if you have something you love, be sure and bring it. Scissors, metal ruler, scraping tool (old hotel key card), palette knife, small-ish (no larger than 6”) soft rubber brayer, spray bottle, palette, water container. Materials for note taking. Apron and gloves are optional, but I will be wearing them :)

The Other Side of the Ocean
Have you ever been on the other side of an ocean? That’s what we will find in Mulranny, the special town where we meet. It’s a wee bit magical and often wild and woolly. This land crawled under my skin in the most unexpected way in 2022 and I invite you to join me in 2024 for a mixed media workshop. We will allow our travel to guide us we we construct an art journal then work inside and outside of its pages to respond to the spirit of the wild west coast of Ireland. Like no place I have ever been, color and texture collide in a patchwork of delight. You will be changed. Your art will be changed. Expect the unexpected.
